CLASSIC CEREALS FROM THE FIFTIES AND SIXTIES VOLUME 2
(approx 30 min)
A look back at the cereal commercials that seemed to run every hour of the day (at least, when we were supposed to be watching) when we were kids.
The fact is that most cereals in the 1950's and 1960's were sold to kids--if one could get the kids to ask for a particular brand or flavor, chances were that the parents would go for it, happy not to have to choose brands. So commercials from this era are filled with mini-adventure cartoons starring the Cheerios Kid and Sue; Snap, Crackle, and Pop for Rice Crispies; Linus the Lion-hearted in a very funny spot for Post Crispy Critters (everytime he says the name of the cereal, he's hit by a stampede of miniature animals; Granny Good Witch goes up against Sugar Bear for Post's Sugar Crisp; an animated sun tries to join in a Kellogg's Raisin Bran sing-along; Rory Racoon (a take-off on Rory Calhoun), for Post Toasties, protects a corn field; a tucan speaking pig-Latin pushes Kellogg's Fruit Loops; and the Trix Rabbit tries in vain to get his share of Trix cereal.
Some of the familiar faces from established cartoons include Bullwinkle, who creates havoc in a bowling alley on behalf of Cheerios; the Archies, who plug Post Alpha-Bits to a rock beat.
And then there are the live action commercials, many of which mix animated figures: The loudmouthed Post cereal "postman" is challenged by lots of dogs, etc., and takes traffic cop Rocky Graziano off his beat for a breakfast of Post cereal; Graziano also appears as a ship's captain, telling of an offer of a 45 r.p.m. record of western songs or marches; and Post Sugar Crisp, "the big kid's cereal," helps kids break up bank robberies, train hold-ups etc. And the late Euell Gibbons shows up pushing Post Grape Nuts.
These are the first of what will in time become a many-volume serial (no pun intended).
We have given you two rare Kelloggs spots, one featuring George Reeves with the entire SUPERMAN cast, and the other consisting of a live SUPER CIRCUS show.
The collection also includes a Wheaties ad with the DING DONG SCHOOL'S Miss Francis, a commercial for Nabisco' Wheat & Rice with the voice of Mae Questal (of BETTY BOOP fame) as Buffalo Bee, a spot for Pep with the SPACE CADET crew, and one for Ralston Purina featuring the SPACE PATROL cast.
Other clips include memorable commercials for Maypo, Maltex, H.O. Farina, Trix (before the Rabbit), Quisp & Quake Dolls, General Mills' Pick-a-Pack packages, Twinkles, Cherrios, and -- need we even say it? -- lots more.
