These magical balls come in various sizes, as needed in the shows adventures. Usually they’re found attached on the Trainers’ belt the size of keychains, then grow to a softball size for throwing.

There are episodes were Trainers mistreat Pokemon by either verbal and physical abuse, and at times some bad kids just abandon them, like they might a pet dog or cat. Pokemon won’t help Trainers battle each other.
