Once television began to invade the American home, for the first time, kids had year-round access to Toy land, with specially created advertisements aimed directly at them, featuring memorable jingles and hammerhead hype which pushed the need and desire to be the first kid in the neighborhood to own the most coveted toy or latest novelty.

These are the kids who are now our politicians, scientists, builders, business leaders, civil servants, advertisers, celebrities, media personalities and journalists.

These vintage toy commercials also reflect the norms of American life in the Eisenhower/Kennedy years: Women stayed at home to cook, clean and care for the family, and so little girls changed the diapers of their Betsy Wetsy and Tiny Tears dolls, or learned to cook with a Kenner Easy Bake Oven.

Men earned most of the money and the boys of the post-WWII and Cold War era, inundated with westerns and detective shows with “the good guys vs the bad guys” themes, often played with “war” toys, guns and airplanes. Or, if they were more constructively or industrially inclined, they might have built bridges and cities with their Kenner Building Sets and A.C. Gilbert Erector Sets, or learned the basics of chemistry and astrophysics with Gilbert chemistry sets and a telescope.

TOY GENRE’S

The toy business evolved from mom-and-pop style companies into a multi-billion dollar industry by selling toy products to millions of children watching TV. Here are some of the reasons why:

a- Test Pilots & Astronauts – Visiting Edwards Airforce base, Cape Canaveral; and the Manned Spaceflight Center Houston

b- Cars, Trucks –Models – Racing cars

c- Building things – construction

d- Military –Army – Navy – Marines

d- Dolls – to be mothers; take care of the house

e- Plastics revolution in toys.

f- Trains

Westerns

During the Golden Age of Television, there were over 32 Westerns and just as many Detective shows on TV and there was no way that we could watch Hopalong Cassidy, Annie Oakley, Roy Rogers, and The Lone Ranger without our Mattel Fanner Fifty Frontier gun and holster set with Shootin ‘Shell bullets and Greenie Stik-M-Caps.

  • Story of how Hopalong Cassidy went from a B-Western has bin, to a multi-millionaire pioneering showing his westerns on television in 1948.

  • Many storylines on the history of Westerns on TV and all the stars like Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, Wild Bill Hickok and others.

  • Telling the story of the hand full of toy companies majoring in creating realistic looking toy guns for kids. Mattel becomes a house hold name selling the “Thunder Burp” machine gun.

  • Visiting Collectors of the western shows, toys, and television campaigns.

Detectives

If you saw some kids running up the streets today playing with a Dick Tracy bolt action Tommy Burst Machine Gun, I think you would be on the phone calling the police for immediate back up!

Times have changed since TV was dominated by detective shows like 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, Naked City, Dragnet, and The Untouchables.

a- The story of Detective shows

b- The rise in Spy shows – Man from UNCLE – James Bond
